101955 Bennu

This minor planet is named after an ancient Egyptian god that exclusively appeared in the form of a bird, sometimes likened to a heron or a songbird. This figure may have been the inspiration for the Greek phoenix, and is connected to the god Osiris. He is a symbol of rebirth and played a role in the creation of the world. When everything was just primordial waters, he landed on the very first bit of land in sight, and cried out a call that began creation.

This minor planet was named by student Michael Puzio, in contest to find the name for the asteroid in anticipation of the OSIRIS-REx mission. Of course, the mission was named after the asteroid was named, hence the shared reference to Egyptian mythology.

The symbol for this minor planet is derived from the constellation Phoenix, with the curved head in the center, with a solar dot in the middle representing the sun disk crown as depicted in hieroglyphs, atop a small triangle. This triangle represents the benben stone, the very peak of a pyramid, which it is perched on like at the beginning of the world.
