1203 Nanna
1203.png

This minor planet is named after a series of paintings, all called "Nanna," made by German painter Anselm Feuerbach (1829 – 1880), who was known for painting in a neoclassical style. The Nanna paintings were all of the subject Anna Risi.

The symbol of this minor planet is a Latin letter "N" over a female cross, placed on a rectangular canvas. Note that this symbol depicts a portrait of the woman "N"anna, and not "A"nna or "R"isi; it is always important for a symbologer to keep straight the separation between symbol and referent. Anna Risi is her own person, who lived a life that history remembers in its own way, but it is the projection of her that we call Nanna that is commemorated in art and asteroid, for better or worse.
