1228 Scabiosa
This minor planet is named after a genus of honeysuckle plants distributed throughout Afro-Eurasia. The name derives from their use in folk medicine as a scabies treatment. They are often called pincushion plants, because of the large round shape of the flower, and the small spiky sepals in them. The symbol of this minor planet combines the etymologies of the two terms. It is a Hygeian cup, referring to its use in medicine, with short leaves on the stem of the cup and three vertical lines coming from the top, representing pins in a pincushion. This is one of the eight minor planets acronymically named after Gustav Stracke. |
