1229 Tilia

This minor planet is named after a genus of trees, more commonly known as limewood trees or linden trees. These large bushy trees have a soft wood that is commonly used in carvings. Linden trees feature in a lot of myth and folklore throughout Europe. In Greek myth, Baucis, husband of Philemon, and Philyra, mother of Chiron, were both turned into linden trees. They are considered sacred in Slavic and Baltic mythology. In Germanic myth and folklore, linden trees represented everything from community to justice to love.

The symbol of this minor planet is a regular three-tiered tree glyph, with the top layer turned into a starburst, representing sacredness.

This is one of the eight minor planets acronymically named after Gustav Stracke.
