1312 Vassar

This minor planet is named after Vassar College, a private college in Poughkeepsie, New York. It among the first institutions of higher learning for women in America. The name was chosen because that's where the orbit computer, Maud Worcester Makemson, taught.

The symbol for this minor planet is derived from the seal or logo of the College, which depicts Athena sitting with a book and a laurel branch in front of a building. The symbol is a square lozenge, as in the shield of 2 Athena, with a laurel above it, as in 12 Victoria.
