This minor planet is named after Nüwa or Empress Wa (媧皇), the mother goddess from Chinese mythology. She is known for creating the first humans, and also for repairing the four Pillars of Heaven that hold up the skies.

The symbol for this minor planet is a large half-circle curve supported by four vertical lines, with a star above, which represents the heavens, and the five elements in Chinese mythology: fire, water, wood, metal, and air.
