This minor planet is named after the city and municipality of Ravaniemi in Finland. It is very close to the arctic circle, and is popular with tourists, due to being surrounded by history and natural beauty. The minor planet was discovered and named by the Finnish astronomer Yrjö Väisälä.

The symbol for this minor planet is derived from the elements on its coat of arms: A jagged Y-shape, with a Vestan fire mark above, representing the fireball or flame on the seal.
