1522 Kokkola

This minor planet is named after the very old town and municipality of Kokkola, Finland. The stymology of this name comes from Finnish for "place of bonfire" or "place of eagle."

The symbol for this minor planet derives from the coat of arms of Kokkola. The coat of arms is described in heraldic terms thusly: "On golden field a black tar barrel on its side, red flames emerging from bunghole and both ends." I think that's a beautiful description. This symbol, specifically, is described as a horizontal 1:2 rectangle with a horizontal cross mark on the left and right sides, and with a Vestan fire symbol above it.
