 This minor planet is named after the city and municipality of Joensuu, Finland. It is known for its several universities, and its student culture. The symbol of this minor planet is a stylization of its coat of arms and of the pattern on its flag: it is a shield, two patterns along the negative diagonal: in the lower left, a wave, and in the upper right, a simple stairstep pattern.
