18 Melpomene

Melpomene is one of the nine muses of Greek myth, which include Terpsichore, Erato, Clio, Thalia, Polyhymnia, Calliope, Euterpe, Urania, and Melpomene. She is the muse of tragedy. In fact, she was originally considered to be the muse of the chorus, and was associated with melodious singing and lyrical turns of phrase, but because the Greek chorus plays such an important role in tragic theater of the time, it seems her domain shifted a bit.

This asteroid has a classical symbol: a dagger, which is one of the muse's common symbols along with a tragic mask, over a star.
