1879 Broederstroom

This minor planet is named after a town in the North West Province of South Africa. It was named after the Dutch word for "brother" by General Andries Pretorius, after his two brothers that lived there. The town is known for its lion conservation park, and for its proximity to Leiden Southern Observatory.

The symbol of this minor planet is as the symbol for Leo with a vertical line bisecting the circle, representing the two brothers for whom the town is named.
