1997 Leverrier

This minor planet is named after the French mathematician Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier (1811 – 1877). He worked mostly with celestial mechanics, the mathematics of the physics of our Solar System. He is well-known for his prediction of the existence and location of the planet Neptune.

The symbol for this minor planet is a monogram of the letters "L" and "V" from his last name. This specific design came from an early and uncommon symbol for Neptune, which is this monogram over a small circle.
