2046 Leningrad

This minor planet is named after Leningrad, one of the largest cities in the historic USSR. Previously this city was named Petrograd, and before the Soviet Union it was St. Petersburg. Under that name, it was the capital city of Imperialist Russia. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the city was renamed St. Petersburg.

The symbol of this minor planet is based on the heraldic symbol of the city, which has endured through all these names since 1730. It is a pair of thin inverted anchors, crossed at a right angle. They represent an ocean anchor and a river anchor, representing the city's role as a river and ocean port.
