This minor planet is named after the city of Okayama in Okayama prefecture, Japan, the city in which this minor planet was discovered.

The symbol of this minor planet is derived from the seal and flag of Okayama. It is a five-point star in a crossed-Y shape, represented as a starburst with the upper vertical and lower diagonal lines removed.
