The original Latin name of the city of Paris, when France was Gaul, part of the Roman Empire. Not to be confused with Paris, the Trojan prince from Greek mythology.

The asteroid was named in 1852, when France was in its second empire. During that time, the coat of arms of the city of Paris were as below. This symbol is based on it: a fleur-de-lis over a curved boat.
