This minor planet is named after the Encyclopédie, a French encyclopedia published during the Enlightenment. Its full title translated into English is "Encyclopedia, or a Systematic Dictionary of the Sciences, Arts, and Crafts." Innovative for such texts at the time, the Encyclopédie featured contributions from various experts in relevant fields. These include Voltaire, Montesquieu, Diderot, and d'Alembert. The symbol of this minor planet is a glyph of an open book, with the right page featuring half of a horizontal bisection as in the Latin capital letter E, and the left page featuring a solar dot. This is a reference to the first page of the book, which has on the right the title page, and on the left a full-page illustration of a woman representing Truth illuminated from behind by the light of the Enlightenment with her veil being torn off by figures representing Reason and Philosophy. So there you have it. |
