2111 Tselina
This minor planet is named after the Russian word tselina (целина́), meaning lands that are virgin, whole, and fertile. It was named to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the beginning of the Soviet Union's 1953 Virgin Lands Campaign, in which they boosted the agricultural production of the country, an effort largely made possible by the work of Komsomol volunteers. The symbol of this minor planet is a variation on the symbol for 1 Ceres, with the Cerean sickle replaced with the Cyrillic capital letter Tse (Ц), rotated counter-clockwise 90 degrees. |
