23238 Ocasio-Cortez

This minor planet is named after Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a student from Yorktown High School in New York who won second place in the 2007 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair with a microbiology research project.

However, unlike many of the students in this contest who win the honor of having an asteroid named after themselves, Ocasio-Cortez would later become publicly known for something completely different. In the 2018 American midterm elections, she won New York's 14th congressional district chair, beating a ten-term incumbent in a big upset victory. At 29 years old, she became the youngest woman ever to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. She has established herself as a dynamic upstart with widespread grassroots appeal, and in many ways represents a new face to the Democratic Party.

It is quite uncommon for a political figure to have an asteroid named after themselves while they are still alive. I expect that I will have to come back to edit this page quite a few times in the future.

The symbol for this minor planet is the initials "AOC," a common appellation for Ocasio-Cortez, over the ISEF symbol.
