This minor planet is named after Leucothea, a sea nymph (different from a nereid) from Greek myth. Her name literally means "white goddess," and the myth goes that she was once a mortal woman named Ino.

There is a classical symbol for this asteroid: an ancient lighthouse, which is a burning lamp hung upon a wooden post. I do not know who originally devised this interesting symbol.
