37 Fides

This minor planet is named after Fides, the roman goddess of loyalty and trust. Her Greek counterpart is Pistis.

This asteroid has a classical symbol, and is in fact the largest-numbered asteroid that has one. It is simply a cross: a short horizontal line bisecting a long vertical line. It seems that the symbol was designed by the asteroid's discoverer, Karl Theodor Robert Luther. The cross was not a common symbol of the goddess Fides during the time of Roman paganism, but the association came around due to later Christian re-interpretations.
