376 Geometria

This minor planet is named, quite simply, after the branch of mathematics known as geometry. It is concerned with the properties of space, points, lines, angles, planes, shapes, solids, and much more. It is a fundamental field with many direct applications in physics, art, engineering, and other everyday pursuits, yet it also underlies advanced topics in modern mathematics, including topology and differential geometry.

The Latin word originally derives from the words geo for Earth, and metron for measurement. Indeed, one of the early great accomplishments of geometry was the measurement of the circumference of the Earth, done by Eratosthenes around 100 BCE. In honor of this approximate etymology, the symbol for this minor planet is the Earth, with a measuring stick laid horizontal tangent above it.
