This minor planet is named after the city of Genoa, Italy, rendered in Latin as Genua and in English as Genova. It is a very long-lived city with a ton of history, and is one of the most important ports in the Mediterranean. The city is full of beautiful historic landmarks.

The symbol of this minor planet is a large cross, referencing the city's flag which came to be known as St. George's cross, with a water wave below, signifying the city's port status.
