49 Pales
49.png

This minor planet is named after a deity or deities from Roman myth. The nature of the name and of the Latin language is such that "Pales" could refer to a male or female deity, or could also be singular or plural. In any case, Pales was a deity that presided over livestock and protected shepherds.

The symbol for this minor planet is as Ceres, another Roman goddess relating to agriculture, with two horns atop it made of arrows. This symbol combines both male and female elements in the lower cross and the up-right arrow, and the two horns represent the multiple dualities of this deity.
