52558.png

This minor planet is named after Antonio Pigafetta (1492 - 1531), an Italian navigator and geographer. He participated in the first circumnavigation of the globe from 1519 to 1522, as an assistant to Ferdinand Magellan.

The symbol of this asteroid is derived from 4055 Magellan: A small Earth enclosed by a larger circle, with a P inscribed on the upper hemisphere of the Earth.
