55 Pandora
55.png

Not to be confused with the moon of Saturn.\nThis minor planet is named after a woman from Greek myth — the first woman, specifically. She was created by Hephaistos and given gifts by all of the gods: skills, grace, intelligence, and of course, a jar full of plagues and evils that would besiege mankind until the end of time. She was the wife of Epimetheus, and was perhaps a curse by Zeus for the crimes of his brother Prometheus.

The symbol of this minor planet is not a pithos, the Greek vase which she originally carried, but the mistranslated and much more commonly known Pandora's box. It is a square with two top flaps opened out on either side. An asteroidal star is inside, representing hope, the last thing left in the box.

There is another somewhat common symbol for Pandora out there, used in various astrological circles in the 20th century. It is asquare-ish trapezoid, with the top slightly wider than the bottom, also likely representing a box or pithos [1]
