This minor planet is named after Octavio Paz Lozano, Mexican poet and essayist who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1990. He wrote many books and poems over a number of themes, including Mexican history, politics, culture, and surrealism. One of his early and significant poems is "Piedra de Sol," a poem which bases its form and composition on the Aztec sunstone or calendar stone.

The symbol for this minor planet invokes that poem by symbolizing the form of the calendar stone: a circle with eight radial marks around the edges, and a dot in the center.
