The name of this minor planet is derived from the Japanese word mayu, meaning "eyebrow," and boshi, meaning "star." It is a reference to Mt. Bizan in Tokushima, Japan, which is often fondly said to represent an eyebrow from all angles.

The symbol for this asteroid is an eye with an iris and asteroidal star, with an eyebrow above it in the rough shape of Mt. Bizan.
