This minor planet was named in honor of the 60th year of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, during which this minor planet was discovered. The 60-year celebration of something is somewhat charmingly called a diamond jubilee, hence the name.

The symbol of this minor planet is a simple rendering of this emperor's imperial monogram, the letters F and I posed over a vertical line with a crown above.
