71 Niobe
This minor planet is named after a woman from Greek myth. She once boasted to Leto that she had fourteen kids to her two. In what mythographers agree is a completely warranted and appropriate action, Leto's son Apollo killed all of Niobe's sons, and Leto's daughter Artemis killed all of her daughters. Niobe, distraught, turned to a weeping stone. The symbol of this minor planet is a depiction of that sorrow: a teardrop coming down from a star. |
