This minor planet is named after René Magritte (1898 – 1967), a Belgian artist known for his work in the surrealist movement. Many of his paintings are concerned with the representation of mundane objects in uncommon contexts, a careful poetry of mystery and meaning.

His most widely recognized work is the 1929 painting entitled The Treachery of Images, which consists of an image of a pipe, subtitled with the text "Ceci n'est pas une pipe." It is a statement about the gulf between representation and reality, the unbridgeable divide between symbol and referent.

The symbol of this minor planet is not a pipe. Instead, it is a symbolic representation of a pipe, made from an angular oppen barrel and a curve going up and to the right.
