From the JPL Small-Body DataBase:

Ewen A. Whitaker (b. 1922) was a founding member of the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory. He participated in the construction of lunar atlases and maps. For Apollo 12 he successfully identified the crater in which Surveyor III had landed. He located manmade impact craters using lunar surface imagery.

The symbol of this minor planet is a monogram of the letters E. W. over an astronomer's star-in-circle.
