88705 Potato
This minor planet was named in honor of the International Year of the Potato (no, really), as declared by the United Nations in 2008. This tuber was originally cultivated in the Andes mountains, and spread to Europe in the 16th century. Today, it is one of the key staple foods throughout the world. The name is also a tongue-in-cheek nod to the fact that most minor planets look like lumpy potatoes themselves. The symbol of this minor planet is a reference to the French name of this food, pomme de terre, "apple of the earth." The symbol is a large apple glyph, an open circle with a stem coming from the upper left, with a terrestrial cross inside. |
