From the JPL Small-Body DataBase:

Peter H. Smith (b. 1947), planetary scientist at the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory, participated in the LPL Radial Velocity project and led the development of multispectral stereoscopic cameras flown to Mars. He is a coinvestigator on the descent imager aboard the Huygens probe.

The symbol of this minor planet is a monogram of the letters P. H. S. over an astronomer's star-in-circle.
